The "Australian" Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog was developed to work along side with the early settlers and stockmen to bring in wild cattle from the outbacks and the most remote areas of Australia colonies. They were developed to travel long distances between the colonies and to deal with the hottest weather conditons that Australia can have. The ASTCD or Hall's Heeler is a drover's best mate.
The ASTCD has a natural working aptitude to control cattle, ever watchful, obedient and alert. He is loyal, courageous, and devoted to his family though suspicious of strangers.
The Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog is an older breed than the Australian Cattle Dog. They are actually the predecessor
to the Cattle Dog and are recognized as a true separate breed
not a variety.
1845- The Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog was recognized and possibly believed to be the very first pure bred working dog to be developed in Australia , specifically for Australia's conditions. The STCD is a valuable all-rounder and a hard working dog. (at this time the breed was known as the STCD, Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog)
1920- The ASTCD and the ACD where being shown in the same class and were registered as "Cattle Dog" (longtails) and "Cattle Dog" (Stumpy Tails).
1927- the two breeds were recognized, split and shown as two independent, separate breeds.
1950- The ANKC attempted to "de-register" the Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog because it was discovered that they were being cross bred to (ACD) , if born with tails, were registered as Australian Cattle Dog (long tails) and if born with a natural bob tail , they were registered as Stumpy tail Cattle Dogs. All within the same family, dam, sire, and same litters.
Glen Iris being the only registrable kennel and having registered Stumpy Tail Cattle Dogs at the time.
1980- the breed was on the brink of extinction
1988- ANKC announced the Introduction of the re-development and grading scheme, which has saved the breed and is no longer overlooked in the show ring and consistently being considered for top awards and in sporting events. Most importantly, a remarkable and valuable worker on the fields, with great endurance and stamina.
2002- the name of the breed Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog was officially changed to "Australian" Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog.
2006- ANKC announced the closure of the grading scheme/ redevelopment procedures. Due to sufficient numbers of registered Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle dogs and Stumpy breeders within the Land Down Under.
Just a note, different cattle dogs have been called of all
sorts of nicknames but the ASTCD is in other words called
the Hall's Heeler, or Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog. I believe that
this may have created much confusion between the breeds
ASTCD and ACD and what people concieve to input into their
minds. The Stumpies were here long before the Australian
Cattle Dogs as the Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog was the progenitor of the Australian Cattle Dog.
